Comment on How to Grow a Dwarf Banana Tree by SCgardenlady http://www.houseplantsforyou.com/dwarf-banana-tree/#comment-2678 Sat, 22 Feb 2014 15:07:36 +0000 http://www.houseplantsforyou.com/?p=572#comment-2678 It is necessary to remove the pups in order for it to bear fruit. Carefully slide a spade down between the corm and the pup. Splitting the pup from the corm. replant the pup into a separate container to start a new plant. Once the original plant bears fruit, it will fall over and die, BUT the corm will continue growing and send out new pups. Constantly remove the pups to start new plants to bear fruits.

It says that growing plants in water rather than dirt, prevents under watering and over watering! How can growing a plant in water be described as ” not overwatering” it? Please explain! Thank you!

What do I use for nutrients? And how do I clean the pebbles after they get salty looking? I have three growing/surviving in pebbles but they are really needing food now, it’s been a few years!

Without asking, my gardener (or his workers) cut the leaves back. I’m in a panic that it may have been harmed. It has never been cut like this. Will it regrow?

Thanks

Comment on How To Grow An Old Fashioned Sweet Potato Vine by Devasmai http://www.houseplantsforyou.com/how-to-grow-an-old-fashioned-sweet-potato-vine/#comment-2673 Fri, 31 Jan 2014 22:19:38 +0000 http://www.houseplantsforyou.com/?p=91#comment-2673 I hope there are still some of you who are talking about the magnificent sweet potato plant.

I have some red plants in water that I grew from slips. I planted them in dirt (there are so many long roots). Well, the started smelling like rotten eggs (probably over watered) so I rescued a few plants and put them back in water. The roots are sooooo long and wirery. Can they be cut down? I’m really want to save the plan. Since reading here it appears I watered too much. I need a bit of advice. Thanks!

Each year it has make rizomes and comes up again. It also produces seeds. But this year when it is dying back it looks terminal. I don’t see any spures or spikes of a new plant coming up. Is it too old? or is it just slow. I think it may have been a bit too dry I am using VF 11 trying to revive it. What do you think is it just old?

I have had one for 40 years and it is now 20 feet tall. I live in California, but it’s first 8 years it lived in my bathroom in Oklahoma. I was forgetful sometime about the watering, so I figure yours must not be use to water either. Mine lives in my frontyard now in east county San Diego. Very good drainage! (South African climate) Stop watering and good luck.
