Winter is quite a rough time - for us and for our garden plants. It's cold and we aren't in the mood for anything. Our plants are feeling bad too. How to make them feel good? Which plants are more likely to survive at this time of the year?

A winter garden is one of the best places to grow flowers, especially the exotic ones. We can also have vegetables, lemons and oranges there.

The most popular winter-garden plants are climbers and hanging type plants (for example ivy), high species (i.e. Chinese roses, oranges) and low species (winter begonia). You can also use your greenhouse to grow forced vegetables for example paprika or tomatoes.

In the winter garden we have to take care of the plants and the conditions that they are in more carefully than in summer time. The most important conditions are the temperature, lighting and air humidity. There are sometimes situations when people grow very demanding plants in their gardens like Chinese Gooseberry (well known as kiwifruit), or passion fruits. Having winter gardens can bring us a lot of benefits.

We can put the plants that we grew earlier in the greenhouse into our home and they will increase the quality of our air, and bring an original look to our interior. The smell of leaves and flowers have a positive impact on our mood and thanks to them we feel calmer.

We will only achieve these results when we treat our plants well. Mistakes made in growing may end up badly. Not seldom we have situations of damaging the flowers or even death. The main course for blame for this is bad conditions or choice of wrong place. Symptoms that should worry us are spots on the leaves and their strange colour.

It depends on us, our imagination and needs, what we will do with our winter garden and what plants we will have there. But it's worth thinking about when we are at the planning stage of designing our garden.

Natural Mood Boosters For a Better Mental Attitude

The mood is a feeling or state of mind that you have at present and can change several times each day. Mood swings can occur for as long as hours or as short as minutes. Every person experiences being low because it is a natural occurrence in humans, and our mood is affected by so many factors including diet, lifestyle, genes and the environment we are in. However, there are people who have more frequent low mood episodes than others. It can also become chronic and a cause for concern. There are medications that are prescribed for elevating the mood but they have side effects that can produce more harm than good. To be safe, try using natural mood boosters to improve your mental disposition.

One of the natural mood boosters that are most utilized is fish oil. This can be found in various kinds of fish such as tuna, salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and trout. You can also buy a food supplement containing pure fish oil. Studies have shown that fish oil is rich in omega 3 which are fatty acids that includes eicosapentaenoic acid, more commonly known as EPA. It is important in making our brain function optimally. The human body does not produce EPA naturally, which makes it important for us to get it from other sources. If our brain has no source of this fatty acid, it will use other fatty acids available in our body which causes us to be depressed.

Plants are also utilized as natural mood boosters. One of these is called St John's Wort and has been found to be as effective as the commercial medication known as Prozac. The plant is made into supplements that can be taken more conveniently by people diagnosed to have mild depression. But if you are taking other kinds of medications, you should not take such a supplement without the advice of a doctor. It can interact with them and produce some harmful effects on your body. There are also certain conditions that may be worsened by taking the supplement.

Engaging in some form of exercise is also one of the natural mood boosters which you can do. It does require any special equipment to do simple exercises and you do not have to take anything. Increasing your physical activity releases the so called happy hormones which makes you feel good. It is also great for combating stress which is one cause of low mood.

Plants Toxic to Animals.

According to The Humane Society of the United States, there are over 700 harmful and sometimes deadly plants that can poison our pets and should never be grown inside or outside on your property. Cats in particular will nibble the leaves and seeds unaware of the adverse reaction to follow which, in many cases, is fatal. Check with HumaneSociety.Org for a comprehensive list of deadly houseplants that can harm your beloved pet. Cardiac arrest, kidney failure, neurological disorders and gastrointestinal disruptions are the most common symptoms from plant toxins and must be treated immediately.

Bonsai Trees.

The bonsai tree makes an excellent house guest with minimal maintenance and a lot of style. These miniature trees come with traditional green foliage or colorful buds, strutting their stuff in full animation designs. The bonsai plant does well in almost any kind of potting, from glass terrarium containers to simple shallow pans. Use richly textured color gravel to fit your creative space or design your own world with miniature ceramics and garden accessories. Larger bonsai, such as the Golf Ball Hawaiian Umbrella bonsai tree will require a heavy cast planting pot, but most of the unique bonsai species will thrive with minimal planting space. Use the bonsai for your kitchen countertop, wall niche or that perfect centerpiece for the dining room table. Most bonsai enthusiasts are ardent indoor plant collectors, where the first little tree is merely the flash point for a lifetime of bonsai appreciation. Buy a bonsai and join the club.

Helpful Hints.

Your bonsai plant may be moved outdoors in the spring and summertime, however, they do not thrive well when the temperatures drop below 40 F. In addition, all types of indoor plants may be temporarily moved to a protected patio when you are on vacation. Just be sure that you keep a cardboard or canvas barrier over the plants to shield them from intense direct sunlight or wind conditions. Plant sitters are available in the phone book, but if you are not comfortable giving them the key to your home, send your indoor foliage to the back porch for two weeks and all will be well when you return.

Pots and Containers.

Part of the decorating fun is finding the perfect plant container to mix and match with your interior color schemes. The best pots and containers for your indoor plant to thrive should have drainage holes and plenty of room for your plant to grow its roots. Small Terra Cotta pots are often used as a transport vehicle from the store or greenhouse to the home, but are insufficient to sustain a healthy plant life. Ceramic and clay pots remain the number one choice of indoor plant enthusiasts, however, lightweight plastic and fiberglass containers will work just as well. Larger plants may be complimented with bold brass and copper pots, available in sweet petite to astronomical sizes.

High Output LED Grow Lights Lead to Superior Plant Growth

Color Temperature and Lights for Plants

Although understanding the differences in grow lights, including LED hydroponic grow lights, can become complicated rather quickly, there is a bit of information that will help you select LED hydroponic lights that will work well with the types of plants you wish to grow indoors, which includes color temperature.

Grow lights, including LED lights for plants, put out a color temperature that is related to plant growth. Color temperatures in the lower end of the scale, around 2200-2300 kelvin show up as visual light that looks warm, in the red to orange range. Red spectrum light is needed by mature plants in order to induce the plant to produce flowers and fruit. Color temperature in the higher end of 6000-6500 kelvin is seen as cool spectrum light in blue tones. Blue spectrum light is needed by plants to stimulate vegetative growth, most especially immature seedlings that you wish to grow or leafy plants like lettuce and other salad greens.

Better quality led lights for plants use only the light spectrums that your plants need. Of course, there are other spectrums, such as green light, that plants cannot use, and thus is wasted in an indoor gardening situation. Many traditional grow lights offer full-spectrum light, which gives the red and blue light, but also gives you other spectrums which the plants cannot access, and thus you end up paying for light the plants cannot use. High-end, high output LED lights offer only red and blue spectrum light, which can be adjusted to your custom specifications for your plants, resulting in extraordinary rapid plant growth.

What to Look for In Grow Lights for Sale

When you go online to find lights for sale, you will want to look for lights that cover growing area your plants need with bright light. With LED grow lights for sale online, you will not need fans and ducting because the LED grow lights run very cool.

Look for high output LED lights that have a high wattage, which will produce bright light. This helps LED grow lights for plants to emulate bright sunlight. For all this light, you will pay a fraction for electricity as you would for traditional lighting, another benefit for indoor gardeners coming from high output LED lights and LED hydroponic lights.

In recent years growing tomatoes upside down has became a really popular way to enjoy sweet vine ripened tomatoes. It’s an ideal choice for anyone that has limited space. Because the tomatoes are grown in a hanging container, you can grow them almost anywhere. While you can purchase upside down tomato kits, you can easily make your own for free.
When you are choosing tomato plants, bear in mind that you need to use the smaller varieties that are suitable for growing in a container. Choose healthy plants that are well established and about 6 inches tall. Avoid plants that blooms or fruit. While it might seem like plants that have already started to produce fruit might give you a earlier yield, it actually might delay harvest.
Choose a bucket or container based on how large the variety of tomato you choose grows. You need a sturdy bucket that has…
Impatiens can be planted in almost any area in the garden which makes them a very popular flower. Depending on the variety you choose, Impatiens can thrive in either sun or shade.
The amount of water a plant receives is often hard to control in a regular garden. Some plants require lots of water to grow healthy and strong, while others require very little water. Many plants are susceptible to root rot if they’re left standing in water for too long. Too much water is one of the main causes of dead plants.
There is an easy way to test your soil to see how well it drains. Dig a hole in any area of the garden that measures ten inches deep. Fill the hole up with water and wait for all of the water to soak into the ground. Then, fill the hole back up with water again. If that water isn’t gone within approximately ten hours, the soil has very poor drainage and is not suitable for most plants.
The most common way to provide the proper drainage for plants…

The Venus fly trap is perhaps the most well know carnivorous plant species. It’s an interesting conversation plant and an amazing predator to watch. These plants produce a sweet nectar that lures their prey into the jaws of their traps. The traps are lined with a series of fine hairs that when touched, trigger the jaws to close.
After the prey has been trapped, the Venus fly trap will secrete an enzyme that literally dissolves the insect into an easily digestible meal. It will take several days for the plant to complete the digestive process. But, as soon as it does, the traps will open once again and wait for it’s next meal to come along.
Given the proper care, Venus fly traps are fairly easy to grow. They need a very bright light, but can’t survive in hot, direct sunlight. Because they need a warm temperature, high humidity and…

There’s few things that can match the juicy sweetness of a fresh picked strawberry. That sun ripened taste just can’t be found in your local grocery store. Growing your own strawberries is very rewarding. You can eat them still warm from the vine, in a favorite dish or pie, or you can make delicious home made strawberry jam.
Strawberries only grow about 6 to 8 inches in height and spread to around one foot. So, they don’t require a large amount of space to grow. In fact, you can even grow strawberries in a window box, hanging basket or other container. They produce long runners that bloom with pink or white flowers which eventually turn into a delicious strawberry.
In areas that experience mild winters, strawberries can be planted in the last summer or fall for a wonderful spring harvest. In areas with harsh winters, you will need to wait…
Growing healthy houseplants that flourish and give you years of enjoyment, depends on knowing which plants can survive under poor lighting conditions.
During the Victorian Era, the Cast Iron plant was one of the most popular houseplants. With it’s draping green leaves, it’s an ideal way to add a tropical flair to any room, although it isn’t a tropical plant. It’s available in both a dark green and variegated variety. This plant is very hardy and once the plant is established it can even tolerate drought.
It’s a slow growing plant, so if you want one of any substantial size, it’s best to just purchase it. These plants can reach just over 3 feet in height. The variegated variety generally costs about twice as much as the standard green variety. But, the white contrast on the dark green leaves might be worth paying extra for. It’s a really pretty plant that doesn’t require a lot of care.
Occasionally, the Cast Iron plant will flower when kept indoors, but this is very rare.…

Sometimes referred to as the Bella Palm, the Parlor Palm (Chamaedora elegans) is a relatively easy houseplant to grow. It’s a fairly inexpensive palm that is very well suited to indoor life. The Parlor Palm is an upright plant that rarely reaches over 4 foot in height, or 3 foot in width. The compact growth and easy care makes it an ideal houseplant.
The palm will flourish and grow much better in filtered light. With this plant you actually don’t need to guess about adequate lighting. If the palm is sitting in an area where there is enough light for it to cast a shadow, it’s getting enough light! And, it will do well in both natural sunlight or artificial lighting.
The amount of water the Parlor Palm needs will depend on how much light it receives. A brighter light means more water, while lower lighting means less water. On…

The Madagascar Dragon Tree (Dracaena marginata) is characterized by long, narrow leaves that are extremely spiked. The foliage is generally dark green with edges that are adorned with a reddish purple and can grow up to 16 inches in length. As the tree grows it will naturally lose it’s lowest leaves leaving tufts of leaves atop a bare woody cane.
Although species vary, this variety can grow as tall as 20 feet in height. But, when kept as a houseplant, it generally only reaches around 6 to 8 feet. The size can be controlled by cutting the tops off. The cane can be cut at any height and within weeks you will begin to see a new tuft of leaves growing at the cut area. It’s better on the plants health to cut the cane during spring or early summer.
One of the fun things about this plant is that…
Healthy plants will even produce sweeter tasting fruits and vegetables. There are several places where you can purchase plants. You can go to your local garden center or nursery, and often even find them at a neighborhood grocery stores.
One of the main ways to determine the health of a plant is by the way it looks. Firm stems and leaves are a good sign that the plant has been well cared for. Always avoid plants that are drooping and wilted. This generally means that the plant hasn’t received enough water and the roots could be severely damaged. You should also avoid plants that have holey leaves. This usually points to an insect or pest infestation.
Never purchase a plant that has already started producing small fruits or vegetables. It might…
With a constantly growing population and progress taking over much of the land, container gardening is becoming a viable option.
Almost everyone loves the taste of fresh vegetables, but many people just don’t have the room or space for a garden. If you live in an apartment, or have a small yard, you can still have delicious fresh vegetables with container gardening. A container garden can be set up on a patio, deck, balcony, or a nice sunny window.
Just like any type of gardening, container gardening does take a little planning. You need to choose the types of plants you want to grow based on the amount of light the area has. If you have an open deck, choose plants…
One of the best ways to have healthy garden plants is to know what each plant needs. Some plants require more light, more water and more fertilizer than others. Do your research and learn what type of conditions are best for each plant you want to grow. Most vegetable plants have to have at least 6 hours of sun each day. However, there are plants that need a full 8 hours of sun.
However, there are plants that need a full 8 hours of sun.
If you have long periods without rain, make sure that you water your garden. Most vegetables need at…

Aphids rank number one on the list of most hated plant pests for most gardeners. The pesky little insects love almost any kind of plant or vegetable which makes them really hard to avoid. Aphids are very small and can be either a milky white or light green color. They can quickly destroy a healthy plant, but fortunately they are easy to control.
It’s always a good idea to carefully inspect your plants from time to time. As with any other pest, the quicker you start treating your plants for aphids, the better you chances are of saving the plant. Aphids can spread really fast and if one plant is infected they can end up on all of your other plants as well.
Rosemary, or “rosmarinus officinalis” (dew of the sea) is a perennial herb which grows throughout the year. Its distinct flavor is good on many dishes, and is especially used in Mediterranean cooking. It thrives in dry, sunny climates with well-draining, sandy soil and needs watering only when the soil is about ready to dry out once it is established. Patience is required, as it takes around two years for rosemary bush to mature completely.
When planting rosemary, it saves a lot of time if you start with cuttings rather than seeds. The seeds have an extremely low germination rate, and while the plant will grow from a seed effectively… it is very time consuming. Plant the seeds in April if you are going that route and plan on being very patient.
If you choose to use cuttings, make sure that it is from a new growth and cut to around…

There are many uses for the leaves of the white sage plant, some of which are medicinal. The leaf florets are the ones often dried and used for making smudge sticks for burning. Lay the leaves out and once dried, wrap them in a bundle using a natural fiber such as cotton and tie it in a knot… then take the twine and wrap it around the bundle from top to bottom. Make sure it isn’t so tight that the sage won’t burn or so loose that it will come apart.
In Native American cultures, preparing the sage for smudging is a ritual itself. First permission is asked to cut the stem… and a bit of another herb or a piece of hair is placed at the base of the plant as an offering in return. The prepared smudgesticks are placed in a bowl and lit. As the smoke swirls…
